U.S. Rep. Jared Polis on Sunday sent out a message telling supporters he will announce his candidacy for governor on Monday.
Polis, a Boulder Democrat whose family owns a home in Vail, has represented Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District since 2008. CD2 includes Vail and part of surrounding Eagle County.
The five-term congressman has a been a champion for a wide range of progressive issues, including climate change action, renewable energy, the federal legalization of marijuana and immigration reform.
The millionaire businessman joins a crowded Democratic primary field that includes former state Sen. Mike Johnston — a Vail native who represented an east Denver district in the State Legislature. Current Gov. John Hickenlooper is term-limited and therefore can’t seek reelection.
Here’s the statement Polis issued on Sunday:
“Tomorrow, I will be announcing that I am running for Governor of Colorado.
“I’m running to be your next Governor because I want to turn bold ideas into real results for your family. Colorado can lead the way into the future and, together, we can build an economy that works for everybody — not just those at the top.
“We will make Colorado completely energy independent, with 100% renewable energy by 2040, creating clean energy jobs that can’t be outsourced. And we will finally stop talking about the need to invest in our children, and start doing it. This campaign will be about BIG ideas and a vision for what we can accomplish together for Colorado’s future, and I invite you to join me!
“Tomorrow, I’ll be announcing my candidacy for Governor at stops across the state to highlight a bold, progressive vision for our future, and to learn from Colorado communities that are already leading the way. Please join my campaign – I’d be honored to have you on the team!
“I look forward to seeing you soon on the campaign trail!”
